The town is the trading centre of a large plantation region behind it and is the centre of the banana and cocoanut export trade.

For winter protection, pine needles form the best covering, and, after these, rough cocoanut fibre.

The islands are generally low, and covered with forest, in which the cocoanut palm is conspicuous.

Of the palms the cocoanut is by far the most important.
